I am often surprised by the little attention business owners give to intro employee training.
There are two reasons for that: first, not getting the basics of your intro employee training might get you into big legal trouble; and second, the intro training is your chance to win the commitment and devotion of employees from day one (meaning better customer service, improved productivity and less conflict at the workplace).
That’s why it bugs me how little attention is put into this essential training program.

Employee training is a lot like Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.
You can’t fulfil the top ones without good foundation. One need can be satisfied only after the previous. In the same way, top pyramid training should only be done when the bottom is set up.

- Customer service policies. Including consumer and competition law requirements. Necessary to protect your reputation and keep your company save from customer and partner lawsuits.
- Fire and emergency training. Required by law for all new employees.
- Personal protective equipment. Required by law for all new employees in some industries.
- Industry-specific/job-specific training. Required by law for all new employees in some specific industries. Show them how the job is done around here even if they have a ton of experience.
- Discrimination at work. Required by law in some cases but necessary to protect you from employee and partner lawsuits.
- Bullying and harassment at work. Required by law in some cases but necessary to protect you from employee and partner lawsuits.
- Workflow and procedures. Most conflicts and work mistakes arise from miscommunication. Tell them how things are done even if it seems obvious.
First of all, go and review your intro training. Go through those 11 items and make sure they are in your intro employee training. If they are not, you are set for getting into big legal trouble.
Okay, great! Let’s look at a few other things that are nice to have in your intro employee training (not legally required) and will promote cooperation, better customer service, transparency and growth.

Don’t forget to always discuss the course of the following with employees first.
1. Job related skills. Helps them to do the job better and grow their career.
2. Non-job related skills. Like languages, software, presentation or public speaking skills.
3. Communication skills. Improves office and work atmosphere and speeds up the work process.
4. What others do. Allow them to look into others work and gain a new perspective to increase empathy, co-operation and understanding.
5. Conflict resolution. More problems solved without your interference, faster work flow, more happy employees and customers.
6. Empathy/listening skills. Listening skills training does miracles for productivity and customer service.
7. Legal training. If they know the legislations related to their work, this can save you time in research, legal fees and lawyer hours (plus the occasional avoided lawsuit). Employees become more confident that they are doing the right thing and integrity increases.
8. Industry-related training. Seminars, networking and team-building create a feeling of value for employees and your business.

3. Job rotation. They will be happy to apply new skills, learn new things and maybe discover a hidden talent.

Add extra training that will enrich the work experience of your staff and allow them to produce better results.
