The legal obligations of a ship owner start with the 1978 STCW Convention that describes the STCW Code that regulates international training of seafarers. In 1995 amendments brought the code up to date with the developments in the shipping industry.
On 25 June 2010 Manila amendments to the STCW Convention and Code were adopted and a major revision of the STCW Convention and Code was made.
It’s important to note that seafarers that operate on domestic and international vessels need to follow different codes for training. Some crew members might not need official certification at all. However, we have seen times and times again that successful seafarers go the extra mile and provide more than the necessary legal minimum of raining to all their crew members.
